LIMA, PERU (December 1, 2014)– On Monday, December 1st, Carmen Capriles, Reaccion Climatica, Bolivia, on behalf of the Women and Gender Constituency, delivered a strong statement at the opening of the 20th Conference of Parties of the UNFCCC, calling for full and equal participation, human rights, and gender equality as essential to achieving progress and climate change– alongside real and ambitions commitments by Countries to combat this planetary emergency.

Many thanks to you Mr. President, honorable dignitaries and colleagues,

On behalf of the Women and Gender Constituency, we appreciate the opportunity to recognize the progress made under this Convention in gender and in turn demand greater ambition in what will become the Paris Agreement, which should be based in the recognition of human rights and especially women’s rights, which must be wise, intelligent, sensitive and profoundly humane in order to protect the planet.

It has been proven that climate change intensifies inequalities.

In regions like ours here in Latin America, where women are distinguished by their triple work days; as heads of the household, as mothers and as fundamental players in the economy, it is important to recognize that their livelihoods are being affected either by the lack or excess of water, by increasing agricultural pests, and by the difficulty of producing their traditional products, all of which is compounded by poor access to resources and land, lack of education, and decision-making.

This reality has caused placed women on the frontline of climate action; taking steps daily, implementing local solutions that make a big difference, being the guardians of the seeds. On a daily basis, they propose solutions and take action while time is running out in the corridors of the negotiations. This fact should be recognized within the funding mechanisms for implementation where we must fully recognize the urgent need for tangible support, without which the prospects for survival worsen.

The complexity of the problem requires us to take more drastic measures that invite us to recognize the need to include women as fundamental to achieving real solutions that address root problems and to not support false solutions such as dirty energy projects including nuclear power, hydraulic fracturing, and mega dams that threaten our ecosystems and our cultures and that become elements of a vicious cycle of ecological and social destruction.

In conclusion, my generation is witnessing the melting of our Andean glaciers, but we are not nor will we be silent witnesses, we are here to make an urgent call to governments to take drastic measures, make ambitious commitments and implement real solutions. Full and equal participation, human rights, and gender equality are essential to achieving progress based on actual commitments.

Muchas gracias sr. Presidente, Sra. Directora Ejecutiva, honorables dignatarios y estimados colegas,

En nombre de la Circunscripción de Mujeres y Género, agradecemos la oportunidad para reconocer los avances hechos dentro de esta Convención en relación a género y a su vez
demandar una mayor ambición dentro de lo que vendrá a ser el Tratado de Paris, el cual debe estar basado en el reconocimiento de los derechos humanos y en especial de las mujeres, el cual deber ser una herramienta prudente, inteligente, sensible y profundamente humana para la protección del planeta.

Se ha comprobado que el cambio climático magnifica las desigualdades. En una región, como la nuestra, donde la mujer latinoamericana se distinguen por su triple jornada; como jefas de hogar, madres y como parte fundamental de la economía, es importante reconocer que sus medios de vida están siendo afectados ya sea por la falta o el exceso de agua, con el aumento de plagas dentro de sus cultivos, la dificultad de producir sus productos ancestrales, agravado por el poco acceso a recursos, falta de educación, acceso a la tierra, y a la toma de decisiones.

Esta realidad las ha puesto en la primera línea de acción climática; tomando medidas a diario, dando soluciones a pequeña escala que son las que hacen la diferencia, sin palabras rebuscadas, las guardianas de las semillas ellas son las que día a día proponen, resuelven y actúan, mientras el tiempo corre en los corredores de las negociaciones, es por eso, que esta realidad debe ser reconocida dentro de los mecanismos de financiamiento, para que sus medios de implementación realmente reconozcan la necesidad, la urgencia de contar con un apoyo tangible, sin el cual la situación se ve agravada a largo plazo.

La complejidad del problema nos exige tomar medidas más drásticas que nos inviten a reconocer la necesidad de incluir a las mujeres como parte fundamental para el logro de soluciones reales y dejar de apoyar las soluciones falsas que no atacan las causas del problema, en ese sentido esperamos compromisos ambiciosos que nos alejen de proyectos energéticos sucios que incluyan la energía nuclear, la fractura hidráulica y las mega represa proyectos que ponen en riesgo nuestros ecosistemas y nuestras culturas y que se convierten en herramientas que retroalimentan un círculo vicioso de destrucción ecológica y social.

Para concluir, mi generación está siendo testigo del derretimiento de nuestros glaciares Andinos, pero, no somos ni seremos testigos silenciosos, estamos aquí para hacer un llamado urgente a los gobiernos para tomar medidas drásticas que aseguren una participación plena e igualitaria, los derechos humanos y la equidad de género, que son esenciales para el logro de respuestas en base a compromisos reales.
