Feminist Climate Activism in 2021 – events, submissions and information

We continue to live with muli-layered crises globally. Although many conferences and events had been postponed to this year, they will not take place in person but online and call for well-organized virtual feminist advocacy.

In this post you will find key important dates, submission deadlines and information to build up strong feminist climate activism in 2021.

The following are key important dates for 2021’s climate action advocacy:

Calls for Submission under the UNFCCC:

ALL OPEN WITHOUT DEADLINE

Views on challenges to the full and equal participation of women in climate-related processes and activities

Decision: FCCC/SBI/2016/L.37 (decision 21/CP.22), paragraph 20

Share experiences of engaging women’s groups and national women and gender institutions in the process of developing, implementing and updating climate policies, plans, strategies and action, as appropriate, at all levels

Decision: Table 4, D.5, Annex to 3/CP.25

Share experiences on dimensions and examples of the gender differentiated impacts of climate change, the role of women as agents of change and opportunities for women

Decision: Table 1, A.4, Annex to 3/CP.25

Activities to be implemented from the Gender Action plan during SB52

Priority area A: Capacity-building, knowledge management and communication

Activity A.2: Discuss and clarify the role and the work of the national gender and climate change focal points, including through providing capacity-building, tools and resources, sharing experience and best practices, workshops, knowledge exchange, peer-to-peer learning, mentoring and coaching

Priority area D: Gender-responsive implementation and means of implementation

Activity D.6 Exchange information on lessons learned among Parties that have integrated gender into national climate policies, plans, strategies and action, as appropriate (e.g. information on results, impacts and main challenges), and on the actions that Parties are taking to mainstream gender in any updates thereto, as appropriate

Activities to be implemented from the Gender Action plan during COP26

Priority area C: Coherence

Activity C.3 Strengthen coordination between the work on gender considerations of the subsidiary bodies under the Convention and the Paris Agreement and other relevant United Nations entities and processes, in particular the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as applicable

Deliverables/Outputs: In-session dialogue on Gender Day focused on one thematic area relevant to the Convention and the Paris Agreement to promote coherence reflecting multidimensional factors

 

About the Women and Gender Constituency 

The Women and Gender Constituency (WGC) is one of the nine stakeholder groups of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Established in 2009, the WGC now consists of 29 women’s and environmental civil society organizations, who are working to ensure that women’s voices and their rights are embedded in all processes and results of the UNFCCC framework, for a sustainable and just future, so that gender equality and women’s human rights are central to the ongoing discussions. As the WGC represents the voices of hundreds and thousands of people across the globe, members of the Constituency are present at each UNFCCC meeting and intersessional to work alongside the UNFCCC Secretariat, governments, civil society observers and other stakeholders to ensure that women’s rights and gender justice are core elements of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

About the co-focal points of the Constituency

The Co-Focal Points of the Women and Gender Constituency are largely responsible for the facilitation of the exchange of information between members of the constituency, observer organizations and the secretariat. The current Co-Focal Points are Ms. Bridget Burns and Ms. Ndivile Mokoena who can be contacted via the WGC website

Funding Opportunities: The WGC will have funding to provide support 5 advocates for attendance of SB sessions and COP26. A call for applications will be sent separately.
