5th Anniversary of the Paris Agreement: Ramp up actions to protect people and the planet!

Today, December 12th, the Women and Gender Constituency (WGC) recognizes the five- year anniversary of the Paris Agreement. We hope that in the absence of COP26, today’s virtual Summit, organized by the United Nations in cooperation with United Kingdom, France, Italy and Chile, will present a political moment and catalyst to pressure countries — especially those who are major emitters and who bear historical responsibility for the climate crisis — to ramp up their actions to protect people and the planet.

On this anniversary, we’re reflecting on and celebrating the feminist leadership in our movements and advocacy that continues to push for the action we need, from the context of the Paris Agreement and well beyond. We remember that even when Paris was first passed, feminists of the WGC offered a ‘reality check’ of what the treaty did and did not do, knowing true feminist, global climate justice must still be fought for. Five years ago, we called for systems change, not climate change. This remains just as true today.

We’d like to share this video from last year’s COP, highlighting some of the many feminist voices and organizing that spoke to truth to power then, now and who will for years to come.

Let us continue to organize, strategize and mobilize collectively for a just and peaceful future. Onward!

WGC Interventions during the UNFCCC Climate Dialogues

In four different interventions the WGC reminded governments that ambitious climate action does not only refer to emission reduction targets but ensuring that through those targets – economies and societies are transformed in a way that leaves no one behind.
